Oklahoma City Woman Sentenced to 37 Months in Prison for Robbing Four Banks

OKLAHOMA CITY—Today, BRIONA MARIE OATES (a/k/a Briona Matthews), 30, of Oklahoma City, was sentenced by United States District Judge Joe Heaton to serve 37 months in federal prison for bank robbery, announced Robert J. Troester, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma. In addition, Judge Heaton ordered Oates to serve two years of supervised release upon her release from prison and pay $10,744 in restitution for four separate bank robberies, including:

  • March 4, 2009, robbery of BancFirst located at 11001 N. May Ave., in Oklahoma City
  • March 10, 2009, robbery of J.P. Morgan Chase Bank located at 12324 N. May Ave., in Oklahoma City
  • March 12, 2009, robbery of First Fidelity Bank located 2825 N.W. 164th Street in Edmond
  • March 19, 2009, robbery of Bank of the West located at 12000 N. Penn. in Oklahoma City

Oates was indicted on April 22, 2009 by a federal grand jury and pled guilty to one count of bank robbery, pursuant to a plea agreement, on June 2, 2009. This case is a result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oklahoma City Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andre’ Caldwell.
