FORMER
PRINCIPAL OF SOUTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL INDICTED FOR
THEFT OF OKLAHOMA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS PROGRAM FUNDS

- John C. Richter, United States Attorney for the Western District of
Oklahoma, announced today that a federal grand jury has indicted MICHAEL
JAMES MAPLES, 44, of Edmond, on two counts of theft of Oklahoma City Public
Schools program funds.
According to the
indictment, the Oklahoma City Public Schools is a recipient of federal
grant funds and Maples was employed as the Principal of Southeast High
School. The indictment alleges in the first count that from April 17,
2007, through May 29, 2007, Maples caused the issuance of an Oklahoma
City Public Schools check in the amount of $21,000 from grant funds to
be deposited into a bank account controlled by him. The second count of
the indictment alleges that from June 22, 2007, through June 26, 2007,
Maples caused the issuance of a Southeast High School check in the amount
of $7,330.98 from school activity funds to be deposited into a separate
bank account controlled by him.
If convicted, Maples
faces up to ten years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.00
per count, and restitution. Reference is made to the court pleadings for
further information. The public is reminded that the charges are merely
accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
This case is the
result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation
and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Susan Cox.
